Privacy and analytics
This site counts visits so I can see which pages are useful. Here is what that involves, and how to switch it off.
What is counted
The site uses Google Analytics 4 to record which pages are viewed, how people arrived (for example from a search engine or LinkedIn), the type of device and browser, and an approximate location at town or city level. I use this only to understand whether the site is working and to improve it.
Google Analytics 4 does not log or store IP addresses. Reports are kept for 14 months. Google may process the data on servers outside the UK.
What is not
- No advertising features are switched on, and Google Signals is off.
- The analytics property is not linked to any advertising account.
- Google processes the data on my behalf under its data processing terms, and the setting that would let Google use it to improve its own products is off.
Cookies
Google Analytics sets two cookies on this site, _ga and one beginning _ga_, which last up to two years. They let it tell a returning visitor from a new one. No other cookies are used.
UK law allows this kind of statistical measurement without asking first, provided you are told about it and can object easily. You can do that here.
Switch analytics off
Analytics runs only when JavaScript is on, so if it is off in your browser nothing is being counted.
Your choice is remembered in this browser on this device. Clearing your browsing data resets it.
If your browser sends a Global Privacy Control signal, analytics stays off automatically.
Hosting and email
The site is hosted by Vercel, which keeps the routine server logs any website needs to run securely. If you email me, I use your address and message only to reply.
